PKU and Me: The Struggles of Staying on Diet with PKU
Living with PKU is a lifelong journey, one that demands constant vigilance, planning, emotional resilience and every day brings a unique set of challenges. Managing PKU isn’t just about avoiding high-protein foods; it’s about thinking ahead, checking labels, and making thoughtful choices at every meal, snack, and social event. The routine may become familiar, but that doesn’t make it easy!
There’s no break, no cheat day, and no moment when PKU takes a back seat. The pressure to “get it right” can lead to guilt, anxiety, and burnout, especially when things don’t go as planned. However, perfection isn’t the goal because no one “wins” the PKU battle, it’s just constant but what matters is effort and trying to follow consistency. Every choice made to support your health, no matter how small is a meaningful step forward.
When I think about special occasions like birthdays, holidays, weddings, and nights out with friends, this often revolve around food that isn’t PKU-friendly. These moments can be emotionally draining especially causing anxiety and worry even when surrounded by loved ones. You may feel left out or different, and explaining your dietary needs can be exhausting. Going on holiday takes a lot of extra planning: researching restaurants, bringing medical foods, and sometimes even cooking your own meals while everyone else relaxes. But every time you show up, advocate for yourself, or make a safe choice in a difficult setting, you’re demonstrating strength and resilience.
It’s okay to feel frustrated sometimes. The emotional toll is real, and it’s important to celebrate the small wins, forgive the slip-ups (they happen!), and lean into the support around you. I’ve gained a lot of comfort in connecting with others who understand the daily challenges, whether it’s meal planning, managing emotions, or navigating holidays this can make a huge difference. The NSPKU offers a wealth of resources, guidance, and community support, and Facebook groups are great for sharing tips, recipes, and encouragement with people who truly get it!
Living with PKU is all about progress- not perfection. Small, steady changes like remembering your supplements, trying a new low-protein recipe, or reaching out for support build up over time and are far more sustainable than chasing perfection.
For me, if “I’ve fallen off the bandwagon”, I go back to basics starting with my PKU EASY Microtabs, just once a day. My partner Tommy is my accountability buddy, reminding me (and reminding me again!) until I finally take them. Sometimes the deal is simple: “No Traitors until you’ve taken your tabs!” It works.
If you don’t have a Tommy cheering you on, don’t worry. Set a reminder on your phone or call a friend or family member to tell them you’ve done it. Celebrate that moment, because it is a win. Every small step counts and those wins add up.
Even writing this, I feel as a bit of a fraud as I do slip up and make mistakes but I have to remind myself and I want to remind you that, people with PKU are doing something remarkable every day. Not because you’re perfect, but because you keep trying. You keep showing up, making thoughtful choices, and adapting to life’s ups and downs. That persistence is powerful.
All we can continue to do is keep going, keep growing, and be proud of every step forward that we achieve.
